Target Audience
This program is designed for physicians, dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists, who are called upon to provide specialized nutrition and metabolic support. Medical teaching institutions can provide this course as an instructional element on nutrition support therapy.

Statement of program Need and Program Overview
This compendium addresses the needs of clinicians who require fast access to clear, concise, evidence-based information on the issues involved in nutritional and metabolic support in a wide variety of patient situations. Through didactic presentations by expert faculty, case studies, and learning assessment questions, the participant is engaged in interactive, multimedia learning.

Learning Objectives
Participants may expect to:

• State the issues involved in adequately supporting the nutritional and metabolic needs of patients who have a wide variety of disease states and conditions.
• Identify disease states and conditions in which current evidence shows improved patient outcomes by provision of targeted nutritional therapy.
• Utilize tools and references to supplement and update your knowledge of nutrition support therapy.

Program Level
This program has an intermediate difficulty level rating; assuming a general to thorough knowledge of the literature and clinical practice within the areas covered and geared toward enhancing knowledge of the theoretical basis for clinical practice. For these topics, there is a moderate to strong body of research evidence available or a consensus of expert opinion exists.

Accreditation

	Physicians: A.S.P.E.N. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. A.S.P.E.N. designates this educational activity for a maximum of 13.5 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
	Dietitians: A.S.P.E.N., Provider AM005, is a Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). Registered dietitians (RDs) and dietetic technicians, registered (DTRs) will receive a maximum of 13.5 continuing professional education units (CPEUs) for completion of this program/materials. CDR program levels (2-3). Dietitians may post opinions about this program on CDR’s website.
	Pharmacists: A.S.P.E.N. is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. 	Nurses: A.S.P.E.N. is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. A.S.P.E.N. designates this program for a maximum of 13.5 (2007) contact hours. A.S.P.E.N. is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 3970. Participation in this program does not qualify nurses to alter their scope of practice.

Successful Completion
A.S.P.E.N. provides continuing education credit to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and dietitians who listen in full to all presentations claimed for credit and complete the program evaluation.

Participation Instructions:
To receive credit for this program, during the period of April 2007 - April 2010, the participant must:

• Review the program objectives and faculty disclosures.
• Access a minimum of one Part of the program.
• Listen to the presentation(s). The requirement is to accumulate a minimum of one hour listening time per program part to claim credit.
• Review the case study and learning assessment questions.
• Complete the evaluation and submit it online.

Continuing Education Credit Hours:
Minimum claimable contact hours and maximum available per program Part.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may apply for credit after accumulating 1 hour of listening time, up to the maximum allowable hours for each program Part. If you apply for less than maximum credit, you may not return later to claim additional credit for that Part.
